Historical Planting

In some places, historical authenticity gives way to sentiment and idiosyncrasy. Any plant or tree received as a gift is treasured and will not be replaced, even if it is a 20th century hybrid occupying a prime position in a border of historical species. History and family memories have been combined in the walled "Elizabethan" garden where the old concept of a nuttery has been revived, with a different variety of nut tree for each of the Ramsden's grandchildren. However, production of grandchildren is outpacing planting this year.
The "Elizabethan" garden also contains an experiment in variegated planting, using some unusual foliage and colour combinations:
Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Variegatus', Kerria japonica 'Picta', Weigela florida 'Variegata', Lysimachia ciliata 'Firecracker', Foeniculum vulgare 'Purpureum', Polemonium caeruleum ' Blanjou'
